Pros

I joined York excited to contribute to real satellite missions and be part of a fast-paced team pushing the boundaries of space technology. The promise of end-to-end involvement—from design to launch to on-orbit ops—was incredibly appealing. And to be fair, that part is real. You do get hands-on experience supporting actual missions, which is more than many companies can offer. The team at the ground level—engineers, analysts, and operators—are some of the most capable and passionate people I’ve worked with. Unfortunately, that’s where the positives end.

Cons

The Operations department is run with poor oversight and even worse communication. Leadership decisions often feel arbitrary, last-minute, and disconnected from reality. There’s little trust from the top down, and it shows in how feedback is ignored and how often employees are micromanaged. The lack of process or structure makes mission execution more stressful than it needs to be. We were often left scrambling with minimal resources or planning—band-aiding major issues because leadership wanted things done “fast” rather than “right.” It’s disheartening to work long hours and pour everything into a mission only to feel disposable or unrecognized. Annual bonuses delayed or withheld all together, no pay for forced overtime, and illegal firing practices. Several colleagues quietly left due to burnout or frustration, and their departures were shrugged off. Culture-wise, morale is low and there’s an unspoken understanding that if you question things, you're seen as a problem. They will ask you to risk your clearance and withhold or outright lie to the government, its a dangerous game.

Pros

Motivated and ambitious employees are rallying together at York for honorable satellite missions for government contracts and commercial. It is an extremely collaborative work environment where you can walk up to the desk of a coworker that wants to help you succeed. It’s an environment of “doers” that want to collaborate and work hard. York also encourages new ideas and innovations and there is no red tape to get through to try new ideas. It’s a breath of fresh air to be encouraged to try new solutions and ideas in the workplace! Benefits are great with being fully employer paid and higher than average holidays off (MLK, Presidents’ Day, Juneteenth, day after thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, etc in addition to standard)

Cons

Growing rapidly is hard for any company. York could put more effort into keeping strong talent in all departments.

Pros

They have accomplished much as a new space technology company and been successful at winning contested business. They continue to invest in the company vision and roadmap through M&A. They've found a niche they're really good at. Good benefits. Lots of good people throughout the ranks. Free coffee.

Cons

Definitely an inner circle of leadership that doesn't communicate well. Not a lot of interest in personnel development and growth. There can be a blame and shame culture during high-stress times. Not a lot of recognition or appreciation for long hours of hard work. Leadership doesn't like to be challenged. A lot of paranoia and secrets. Don't expect promotions unless you're willing to make York your top life priority. There are a couple of pretty poor leaders who seem to be retained because of personal friendships.
