Pros

The work is important and the kids we serve can touch your heart in amazing and powerful ways. Starting pay for direct care workers is higher than most residential facilities in the area. Most people don't stick around long enough for raises.

Cons

Employment law? YVCC doesn't care about law. Don't expect breaks, timely pay corrections, reasonable accommodations (ADA) or non-discriminatory practices. Don't expect any respect of your privacy for leave requests. Don't expect fair or legal treatment after using Worker's Comp either. Advancement? Don't expect a promotion unless you have friends in high places. Social connections take precedence over experience and ability. They won't choose the best person for the job when they can choose their best roommate, best friend or best drinking buddy. Time off? Don't make plans that can't be changed last minute. Again, having friends in high places is the only guarantee. Don't expect your time-off requests to be approved without having to double up on shifts to make up for it. And don't bank on time that has been approved. It can (and often will!) be yanked with very little notice. Family? Don't work here if you have one. It's really that simple. You will have to sacrifice your partner and/or children on the altar of YVCC. Friends too, for that matter. Co-workers? Don't get attached to your teammates. They won't stick around long. Chances are you won't either. Management style? Don't expect to be allowed to think for yourself. Micro-management is an understatement. You aren't a person with a brain, you're a cog in the machine and a body to fill a shift. You're only valuable to YVCC if you do what you're told.

Pros

* Fulfilling mission with meaningful work that makes a real difference in the lives of children and families. * Competitive pay and benefits compared to many other nonprofit organizations. * Lots of “lifers” and long-tenured employees who are deeply committed to the organization and its mission. * Standard PTO policy that supports work-life balance and encourages employees to take time off. * Strong opportunities for personal and professional growth, especially for employees who take initiative. * Mission-driven culture where people genuinely care about the youth and families served and are committed to doing what’s right. * Great learning environment with experienced colleagues, supportive mentors, and opportunities to develop new skills.

Cons

* Work-life balance can be challenging at times. * Maternity leave and additional benefits lag behind those offered by many peer organizations and employers. * Performance review and compensation structure can make salary growth feel limited without a promotion or role change. * Aging leadership team seems to lack strong succession planning. * Lack of diversity within senior leadership compared to the broader employee base and communities served. * Siloed departments and teams create communication gaps and limit cross-functional collaboration.
