Pros

Like most financial institutions they give you every bank holiday off paid, and they offer a lot of PTO and sick time off. Most of your co-workers will also be pretty solid people--hard working, ethical, and nice.

Cons

Because there is very little turn-over in senior staff (managers, VPs of one flavor or another) there is very little room for career progression. Some of the lack of turn-over is that Zions can (depending on the department) be a decent place to work. But some of the lack of turn-over is horribly incompetent bosses who will have difficulty finding anything else--so they stay and make their underlings lives miserable. Lack many corporations of this size there is very little accountability for management: no one really cares that much about the bad/poor/sub-optimal behavior of a manager until (and maybe not even then) he's cost them a lot of lost talent. So a bad boss sticks around a lot longer than they should because there aren't any processes in place to encourage feedback from employees at all levels. In my department we endure a manager who has unrealistic expectations of his employees because he doesn't (and indeed seems incapable of) do(ing) any of the work...or anything at all, from our perspective. He lacks the ability to prioritize, plan, or productively interact with his employees. And for a guy who seems incapable of producing any worthwhile work on his own (in contrast to past department heads), he is awfully demanding of his employees. I guess there should be a new saying, "those who can't do, lead."

Pros

- Good culture and work environment in 3 departments I have worked at, except for a few toxic managers here and there. - Compensation comparable to other large banks. - Company tries to communicate all important policies and decisions.

Cons

Challenges (common to most large companies): - Decision that are supposed to save company money, in practice lead to higher error rate, more friction between departments, and unhappier customers, because they are made by higher level managers who don't understand the consequences (e.g. transferring loan operation from affiliates to bancorp, dissolving and creating departments, adopting new software, outsourcing). - Too many meetings with little to no benefit to productivity. - Lack of power for lower level managers to make helpful changes because of the company's tall organizational structure. - A lot of managers' resistance to new ideas and change. - Company has been making genuine effort to help employees grow but it's not successful because it is based on incorrect understanding of what makes a good manager. - Technology problems such as software issues and getting needed access. - Back-to-office mandate has led to many employees very unhappy or leaving, without any seemingly positive results for company productivity.
