There is a disconnect between engineers in the trenches and the expectations of upper management. There doesn't seem to be much opportunity for advancement due to a very large pool of younger engineers and few management spots to move up into.

Promotions are not directly tied into high performance or credentials. Have to play the bureaucratic game and know the right people to be promoted, and usually engineers are not particularity good at this. Manager is detached and separates himself from the “production group”, better known as design engineers. The caste system is a system of division of labor and power and it is in full force in this office. Traveling for several weeks and sometimes several months at a time are enforced with threats of losing your job.
