Pros

We joke that EDF is "an organization full of class presidents." Employees are held to a high standard and evaluated based on results and achievements, not hours worked. Combines the best of a competitive environment (everyone is so talented and wants to impress everyone else) with the best of a collaborative environment (people are generally willing to help others and most projects are managed by the subject matter expert rather than the highest-ranking person). Salary and benefits are pretty good - by nonprofit standards I'd even call them great. The org is run like a business and has a fairly corporate feeling environment. Upper management does not tolerate dysfunction and routinely uses surveys and consultants to make sure we don't have any, and fix it if we do. Staff are friendly and a lot of folks socialize after work, but a lot of folks don't, and either one is fine. There is little to no gossip or interpersonal drama. Turnover is low but we've been growing for several years in a row so there's a good mix of folks with 10 or 20 years' tenure and plenty of new folks every year, too. Because we're growing and adding new positions all the time, a lot of folks have been able to turn a broad job description into an increasingly specialized one over time as new staff members are added to distribute work to.

Cons

HR department is the only department that has a lot of turnover. They are often short-staffed and it can be hard to get assistance with benefits/questions in a timely manner.

Pros

Great organization full of smart, hardworking, people. I enjoyed my time there and learned a lot. I left because there wasn't really a way for me to advance within the organization.

Cons

Tough to get your foot in the door. Tough to move up if you're not starting out in a fairly senior position already.
