Pros

Good benefits. Generally good people. Surprisingly updated computer systems

Cons

To be sure, EPA is a bureaucracy, but this is one that is managed generally by committee. There is no real leadership of which to speak, and no idea how to set priorities. Too many employees are protected, and too much time is spent on meaningless activities.

Pros

Work/Life balance is generally pretty good, and management is *generally* good about allowing people to work from home if they want to. The people who work here are generally pretty earnest about their work and believe in the mission, and are usually pretty friendly. Work can be challenging, and there are plenty of opportunities to explore your own ideas.

Cons

Decisions often get made either with complete consensus from everyone, or behind other people's backs, with a lot of insider politics going on. Much ado is made on working together without any follow-through. The union is too powerful, often sticking up for poor performing employees, which decreases morale for everyone else. Annual performance agreements are mostly meaningless, and there is a lot of paperwork to get anything done.
