Hard Times at EPA

Pros

I work with some of the best people I've know in the past 20 years and 4 jobs! Despite all the setbacks, sequester, furlough, hiring freeze, increasingly risk adverse management, I still love the content and purpose of the work I do.

Cons

All of the external pressures mentioned above have made management extremely risk adverse, micro managing, and less trustful of employees. In particular, in the area of climate change the current administration has asked the agency to do much more with much less. Work load has increased at a time when management is the least supportive. While many employees love what they do, the stress is really starting to show.

Pros

Overall great place to work. It's a very mission-driven Agency, and the staff tend to be smart, professional, and committed to the cause. The work is interesting and rewarding and there's good work-life balance. Flexiplace is available in most departments, meaning you can work 9 1/2 hours a day and have one day off per pay period.

Cons

The EPA's telework policy is antiquated, as as such, there's not much flexibility in terms of working from locations outside the office. Also, opportunities for upward mobility are very limited.

Pros

While culture can vary by office and job field, the EPA provides support for employees and plenty of opportunity within the scope of it's mission

Cons

The cons to working with the EPA are your basic federal employee cons of bureaucratic hiccups and a slower response due to organization hurdles.
