Pros

If you're passionate about environment, this is a place where you'll be surrounded by others who are too. EPA truly attracts some of the brightest in the field.

Cons

Political pressures on EPA can make feeling like you are making progress on particular issues difficult. As with many government jobs, finding pathways for advancement can be a challenge.

Pros

Challenging work. Highly intelligent, driven, good-hearted, dedicated workforce. Your work does more than pad someone else's bottom line.

Cons

Pay is a quite a bit lower than private sector. Staff shortages means many roles are unfilled. Lack of funding leads to difficult choices.

Pros

Good work-life balance with compressed schedules and work from home. An immense learning experience, especially for those few capable of rotating to other offices or divisions.

Cons

Politics and fear control a defensive management. Unnecessary internal bureaucracy creates a mentally painful and exhausting work flow. Ratings and reviews on this site, and internal satisfaction surveys or complaints, do very little to motivate management to truly improve or change anything. Politics, Inspector General investigations, and fear of reprisal are the main forces for change or maintaining the status quo. Any change that does occur is in direct response to these pressures. It will likely get worse before it gets better.
