Pros

Good benefits; management supports work-life balance; substantial annual early career pay raises

Cons

Politics and bureaucracy frequently inhibit progress; senior management bullies lower management; non-management staff have little chance for promotion to management; career staff hit career ceiling after 4-6 years; little investment in continuing professional education for staff; scientific staff perform more administrative work than mission-critical work

Both good and bad

Pros

Great colleagues. Usually you can feel good that you're doing the right thing and helping the environment and communities. It's probably one of the best jobs for an attorney because most days you can be done after 8 or 9 hours, no billables!

Cons

So much bureaucracy. Winds change with politics and you can lose control of an entire program. But there are times you work as hard as private practice attorneys and there is no parallel compensation structure - no bonuses, no easy way to be allowed to take time off outside of the leave accrual structure, which is only 4 hours per pay period years 1 - 3 in the government. When everyone is overworked there is no release valve, if there is a hiring freeze there is no way to add employees and the work piles up and still needs to be done.
