Pros

A nationally recognizable name that gives you a unique perspective on environmental issues. Working here, even as an intern, will give you a basis and perspective for any other environmental job you will have in the future.

Cons

People see the name of the EPA sometimes as a place that works to save the environment. True, but the agency is a regulatory agency, and a lot of actions are from that organizational philosophy. The agency is also very open to female managers, and you will see a number of very high-powered women-- not the case in every agency.

Pros

The government has great benefits. The health benefits and job security are great - Plenty of choices. They pay up to 120 for public transit. Hours are very flexible - they allow you to work from home. You can apply for a maxiflex schedule where they allow you to split up your 80 hours throughout a 2 week work period. The atmosphere is very relaxed. Taking leave last minute is usually not a problem. I get to train to raise my skill levels at least once a year.

Cons

There are plenty of hard workers but there are also plenty of lazy people in the EPA. Alot of complainers that go to the union and say they are being treated unfairly. Even though senior management might know someone is not performing up to par, they will not confront that person in fear of the union.

Pros

The organization's mission is to protect the environment and public health and most people working there support this. The organization is flexible and it allows for a balance between work and life. You are recognized for good work. If you have a solid reputation, you can change jobs within the agency relatively easily.

Cons

A level of bureaucracy,, but isn’t that expected?
