Pros

This is an agency with a mission most of us completely believe in, even if we disagree about how we accomplish it. Unbeatable benefits package and work/life balance. Compared to other government agencies, the bureaucracy is not as suffocating. Pay is better than most other employers in the environmental field.

Cons

While not as bad as other agencies, it's still a lumbering bureaucracy with maddening decisions and an incredibly slow pace. Almost no opportunity for advancement, especially if you don't work in DC. Management at all levels varies from barely functional to downright incompetent. And you get to work for the Tea Party's favorite punching bag, which gets demoralizing in a hurry.

Pros

Salary, Job Security, Interesting projects when entry level

Cons

Terrible management, promotions not based on merit but on cliques, management sees staff as bodies not as talent. Managers care more about themselves than their staff. A lot of internal politics and CYA.

Pros

Well-positioned to effect positive environmental change; reasonable opportunity at staff level to move among different environmental media (air, water, etc.) and offices; Agency is well-supported by the Obama Administration; jobs tend to be very secure at staff level

Cons

Progress on issues can be slow due to huge number of in house stakeholders and concomitant number of meetings; senior managers have inordinate power to negatively affect careers with very little fear of recourse; many Congressional Republicans try to make it difficult for Agency to do its job through limiting funding and "oversight" activities
