Used to be a great place for a medical writer, not so anymore

Pros

Fully remote is an option; training available for entry level medical writer

Cons

Senior management doesn't understand medical communications and is letting that aspect of the business slip while focusing on acquisitions; salaries are based on arbitrary job titles rather than what the individual brings to the company, annual raises are well below cost of living increases, the company emphasis is on culture rather than excellence of the work product; senior medical writer/scientific director has no path for advancement

Horrible

Pros

Good benefits. The flexible work policy is a sham; your future is in one person's hand - your line manager. Senior management does not care or have no idea about what is happening at associate writer level.

Cons

I was stuck with an unethical, narcissistic line manager. I was interviewed by a wonderful person initially. Suddenly, I was told my strengths would be best utilized in another group. But, that was not the entire story; I sensed that this new person I was given was perhaps not easy to work with. My gut was right. In the initial one week itself I sensed so many horrible things. I was told that I cannot write to anyone in the company without my line manger's knowledge, even to HR; I cringed. In my 15 years of work experience all over the globe, no manager ever told me I have to talk to them before I reached out to HR. I felt like I was in a solitary confinement and my interaction was with one person (95% of my time spent in the company). Finally, I was smeared with a mistake on my face, and the truth was nicely covered. I felt very concerned at the unethical standard. I spoke with my professional advisers, they strongly advised me to immediately resign and made me understand the toxicity in the work environment. Luckily, I do have few emails that I forwarded to myself which can act as strong evidence if I ever have to defend myself. I am glad that I am out and free.
