Pros

- Do meaningful work with a supportive team - Gorgeous campus - Great food - Great pay for an inexpensive place to live

Cons

Very poor handling of the COVID-19 pandemic in ways that make it hard for me to trust what management will do in a future crisis, including but not limited to: - Being slow to initially offer work-from-home, and just as slow to offer extensions of it (often demanding employee outcry and/or bad press before they do). - Constantly pushing for a return to campus en masse. - Minimal attempts to convince us that our "culture" of in-person work is worth literally risking our health for. - Suppression of any dissent on our internal forums, such as redacting questions on our internal Stack Overflow-esque site.

Pros

Usually if you see problems the management is open to letting you change it. Ownership is big. I mentioned a significant amount of problems with Epic but that also means great opportunity for people willing to take the effort to force change.

Cons

Epic's efficient hiring process, campus, and salary may be alluring but it is a little bit of a trap. It is symptom of their high turnover rate which exists for a reason. They will grind you up and spit you out. Developers are expected to carry a significant burden and often only get to spend 5% of their time actually developing. The rest of the time is spent fighting with Epic's internal infrastructure that only exists because developers got fed up with the fact that the company did not find it important enough create. This problem persists because older developers at the company are used to it and new developers get so fed up they quit early.

Pros

The work is challenging and meaningful. I feel valued and well compensated.

Cons

Leadership is arrogant and refuses to even acknowledge that they might be wrong. This has been displayed most recently with their handling of COVID, because they refuse to acknowledge that we can be successful working from home in a pinch. Therefore, they are going to be requiring us to return to the office despite public health authorities encouraging businesses to allow work from home. They've been putting their efforts into silencing employees rather than trying to address our concerns in a respectful manner. "Authoritarian" is perhaps a strong word here, but there's no denying the similarities in how internal dialogue is being handled right now and how free speech is handled in authoritarian states. Management does not do a good job at load balancing work, so folks who have a history of success but aren't good at negotiating their workload will often end up with too much work.
