Good starter job, great coworkers, but not a job to stay at forever

Pros

Good as a starter job - good pay, thorough training, and for many jobs, a comp sci degree is not required despite it being a software company Good coworkers - most people were very friendly and the demographic skews very young (since Epic likes to hire people right out of college) Very good health insurance!

Cons

Overall not great - extra effort is not appreciated, management (at least on a team level) can change frequently, and standards change drastically between TLs Epic claims it doesn't do layoffs, but that's not strictly true. They instead "ask" people to set an end date, so they can claim everyone quit instead of being fired or laid off

Not for everyone but great for me

Pros

- Challenging and meaningful work - interesting coworkers - incredible healthcare (like truly life-changing access to a basic human right for the first time in my life) - opportunities to work with customers all around the world - breaking up the doldrum of the work week with travel to your customers or to a go-live customer, but you can control how much you travel to an extent - in my experience at least, supportive coworkers and managers. - very helpful HR person for managing FMLA and accommodations - if you have good self-control after work and good work ethic during the day, you can very easily stick to contract hours most weeks.

Cons

- wildly varying levels of support from management depending on team and assigned TL/manager - sometimes customers expect more than is reasonable and even a good TL/manager is limited in their power to make it better for TS - seemingly basic requests for a kinder workplace get stopped by upper management with no explanation - limited WFH (10 half days a year with optional 2 half day carryover) - like most salary employers, won't discourage you from working extreme (unpaid) overtime because it's to their benefit

Great pay for right out of college, good benefits, excellent cafeteria, smart and capable colleagues, interesting and meaningful work

Cons

Steep learning curve, tough to manage work-life balance but gets easier with time, hard to take vacations without a mountain of work when you get back, few opportunities to “move up” in the company, the company values new employees more than longtime employees, lack of transparency with decisions behind pay rates and performance reviews
