Not for me

Pros

Relatively good salary with regular raises and great benefits. You will learn a lot, including valuable transferrable skills, especially if this is your first full time job.

Cons

In this role, you have to be creative with finding interesting growth opportunities for yourself if you’re not interested in going down the TL/Testing Captain route. A big part of why I left is because I started feeling stuck career-wise. I also got really burned out, which isn’t uncommon here. Part of why I did not want to be a TL/TCap is because I didn’t admire the way some leaders on my team were treating team members, and I didn’t want to manage people in a system where it’s hard to protect your team members’ interests. Another con for me is that Epic supports a broken healthcare system. It feels a bit unethical to work in such an extravagant campus, even though they say it’s not a big expenditure, because ultimately that money comes from patients. While there are lots of good development projects happening, some are also driven by the whims of insurance companies or profit-focused executives. I’m no longer in healthcare IT and don’t plan to go back, but if I did, I’d want to do something a little less “neutral.”

Pros

Learn a ton- even just about how to be a good coworker/member of an interdisciplinary team Opportunities to take on more responsibilities Genuinely smart, interesting coworkers Amenities- even if they’re designed to keep you complacent

Cons

- The responsibilities pile up and it starts to feel like you’re straying further from what you thought your job was - Shadowy and confusing culture wrt DEI - Reminded every staff meeting to not discuss your salary
