Pros

Lots of room to grow into leadership roles very quickly. If you have a good team lead, you will feel supported in this

Cons

Long hours, little empathy for doing good work, small bonus / pay increases even for top performers, except those that upper management favor.

Epic isn't so Epic

Pros

Some of your work colleagues will listen and offer suggestions on programming ideas or pat on the back when something works well. Amazing lunch facility and conference rooms. Campus gives lots of places to work quietly and really focus in on your job. Madison is awesome. Pay is very good and Madison is inexpensive. The weather is great if you like feeling the seasons. Great Pancakes. Foodie town.

Cons

Training is weak and expectations are unrealistic as one moves up the ladder doing work. Team Leads are not trained well in communication or management skills and learn as they go. Some TL groups work better than others. For example, you will be working on a project and a TL will suddenly tell you there are upcoming roadblocks. The solution offered is - "You (not we) will have to give more hours to resolve this. " This is after already putting in a 50-60 hour week. Sadly, 50-60 hours weeks create stressed-out employees who struggle to balance home and work life. Upper management is unresponsive to the impact on morale and socio-emotional conditions at work. I have been on projects and told- "just move it along." "Sink or Swim" is a phrase used around here. HR will listen but is more worried about Epic's liability than the employee. This is ironic because we work in the healthcare field. Loyalty to the company is held in high regard at the expense of staff raising legitimate issue (IE- Remote Work from home- we do live in the snow). .

Pros

Good pay, smart coworkers, budgets do not apply

Cons

leadership is cloned in the image of managers who have only ever worked at Epic; lot of yes men (deliberate word choice as there is very little diversity at Epic...google "Epic diversity" and read all about the historical messaging from their Executive Leadership) but not a lot of emphasis on growing or teaching those around them how to improve - mostly just CYA mode. Employees are simply cogs in the wheel to use and discard when needed.
