Pros

In general, at first glimpse at least, culture of excellence as an expectation. Easy to get noticed if you're of their preferred personality type (completely alpha type, but young, young, young enough to have no frame of reference for comparison). It wasn't hard to get promoted after a year of hard work. They do a good job of making you feel like you matter.

Cons

Lots of unnecessary layers of management that spend a bulk of their time making sure the illusion of the need for their job is protected; instead of developing skilled people and enhancing processes or performance that add real value to the organization. Reports and meetings and meetings and reports, and reports about meetings and meetings about reports; and a meeting about the reports and the data they contained about the best structure and mood of meetings to present the findings of a specific report. Seriously?!?!?! When things are good, life is brilliant. I genuinely mean that. I worked for my branch for years before I ever had a negative experience. But, man, when challenges come, the facade crumbles and the ugly surfaces. You'll get sacrificed without a second thought given. The more loyal the employee seems, the more likely to be martyred for management's sake. There is a clear expectation that your success at EI be the unquestioned top priority in your life. After all, they let you have a picture of your kids at your desk; what else do you really need? You can spend time with them when they're older and you have climbed that ranks.

Pros

- Nice people to work with day to day. - In my experience, my managers took care of me. If you have a good manager who will fight for you will have a good time. - No layoffs in hard times. - Opportunity to move up (to a certain degree) if you know the right people. - Easy work and hours for some roles. - Compensation is great if you know your worth and fight for it.

Cons

- Upper leadership (executive and C-suite) is rigid and old fashioned. - Dress code is completely outdated. Even after they "loosened it up" post pandemic. It is still overly formal for the average worker. All they did was drop the tie. And even now they still require a tie sometimes. - Executive and above don't care about their people. They used to do an annual employee satisfaction survey. One of the biggest asks was for remote work. They just stopped doing the survey because they felt like employees were just saying the same thing over and over. Nothing changed. It actually got worse. - Does not embrace the new normal for work. - Wants everyone in an office even if they don't work with anyone in that office. They have people in an office to sit on zoom calls with people in other places. - Some people in many roles work entirely too much. They run too lean and it causes the really good people to have to carry the load and work crazy hours. - Even after employees proved themselves during the pandemic that they could be productive and bring the company to a high point at the same time. They still want to drag everyone back to an office for "culture" reasons.

Pros

They say "hire for attitude, train for skill", so your co-workers are the nicest. Good intern and Management trainee programs. Good diversity. Benefits are great, nice office building downtown and a free transit pass.

Cons

Competent management has to quietly get things done, the rest lie, lie, lie about their performance numbers. Never get caught using the open door policy ... it sets you up for retaliation. No HR. No recourse. Don't talk to a mandatory reporter or you find yourself talking to Legal, it also makes you a prime target for retaliation. Pay is 20-40% below market unless you are favored. Bonuses are weapons; your manager will pocket it . Training programs are great, but not comprehensive ... personal development is on your dime and reimbursement is slow. Not a great place if you are already established in your career. Lots of micromanaging, nepotism, favoritism, and intrigue. Good diversity in the ranks but little in Management. CEO is the founder's son in law ... and this precedent is seen all the way down the ranks: It's not what you know but who you know, marry, or sleep with. Like a 90's version of Mad Men, complete with 90's technology and dress codes.
