Pros

The company does work on interesting subjects for broad aspects of industries.

Cons

The work at Exponent is absolutely grueling and non stop. Employees are passively expected to be on call 24/7 and on vacation. Few people use vacation time because the work environment is constant pressure to maintain metrics for work. Overall, it is not a good career option - the exposure to actual industry a PhD gets is very, very shallow. As a technical person, the positions will not train you in industry on an in depth level that is expected of a PhD. At Exponent you will gain few translatable skills by working at Exponent - just brief exposures to low level science. On a consultant level, you will gain few usable executive leadership experiences because the company's understanding is that everyone needs to be self sufficient. Mentoring is minimal, especially outside of programs that a few employees get. The pay is below what a PhD candidate can get. The company acts as though it pays in prestige. Exponent is generally regarded as a place of under experienced people who are 4-5 years out from their degree. It can get difficult to find a job outside of Exponent since the experience of a sometimes consultant, sometimes engineer isn't applicable broadly.

Pros

Pros: Wide Variety of Projects: Employees gain exposure to diverse work and industries, broadening their expertise and skill set. Positive Coworker Relationships: Many coworkers are supportive and can create a positive working environment.

Cons

Success Tied to Relationships: Advancement and success within the company are heavily influenced by personal relationships with higher-ups, rather than merit. Unresponsive Management: Management is often unresponsive to employee requests or suggestions, leading to a lack of effective communication and support. Internal Competition: There is constant internal competition for work and credit, both laterally and horizontally, which can create a stressful and competitive environment. Lack of Mentoring and Favoritism: There is little mentoring available, and favoritism is prevalent, resulting in employees often working with the same group of people and limited opportunities for growth and development.

Pros

Smart people, variety of project topics

Cons

Most employees feel alone with no support during their career at Exponent. You are on your own in finding projects and if you don’t have a strong manager who can connect you to a steady stream of projects, you will struggle with increasing your UT. Having a low UT, you will be blamed and is the only criteria you will be evaluated with. There is no support system for new employees at least for the first year. Because of the UT significant importance, colleagues do not support each other to survive. Principals with many projects handle projects themselves with a small group of people around them to have their UT high and get higher bonus at the end of the year. Many other things I can add about the company terrible is the company culture, work life balance, etc. If you have other options, avoid Exponent at all cost.
