FDNY EMS - Paramedic

Pros

Great Colleagues, good benefits and vacation. Can take overtime as time off.

Cons

Extremely Underpaid compared to fire side, constant revolving door due many members using EMS as entry to fire side with its much better pay, working conditions, status and less work load. Can only take 30 days off regardless of vacation due EMS employee. FDNY upper management somewhat selective on anti bullying and prejudice enforcement.

Benefits and job security

Pros

Hard to beat the job security of civil service. Plenty of overtime available. Some great people to work with. Great training opportunities. With overtime for time, you can have essentially unlimited vacation time as well as decent money.

Cons

Tier 6. Especially as an EMS employee. Some miserable people up the chain of command that love sharing their misery with their employees via constant paperwork and command discipline. It's hard to live on an EMS salary without killing yourself with overtime. Bathroom police. It's a real thing. Concern for minutiae above the importance of patient care.
