Pros

Very flexible schedule that allows you to have outside employment and reduce the amount of childcare needed. Solid pay (on paper) and plenty of overtime. Great upward career progression if wanted, however staying at entry level firefighter is not frowned upon and still has many opportunities.

Cons

Very dangerous profession. Much of pay goes towards pension contributions and NYC taxes (whether you live within the city or not) which heavily reduces take-home pay. Although schedule is flexible, it is not consistent which makes having a set schedule for school/work difficult if not impossible.
