Know what you are getting into before agreeing to become an agent for Farmers Insurance!

Pros

Independence, freedom to set your own hours and schedule and being your own boss are the biggest pluses. As an independent contractor you set most if not all of your goals for sales. Very nice, if you have competitive rates...

Cons

Very high rates for starters (certainly in IL anyway). The new agent contract effective May 1, 2009 is also very demanding. Be sure to carefully consider all its limitations and constrictions before signing! In short, the contract has ghanged for agents (and not for the better).

If you are becoming an agent, be sure to have a stockpile of cash as you won't be bringing a check home for awhile.

Pros

As an agent, you set your own schedule and your business goals. You can operate under a limited of oversight and control your own destiny.

Cons

As an agent, be prepared to make little or no money for the first couple of years until you get your book of business established. Also be wary of life production requirements as that's really all that the company cares about.

Pros

Opportunity to grow and make money, and open up your office, if you can do it that is.

Cons

The training, was primarily getting your licenses.. If your not selling you can find your self in debt. Unless senior agent drops out of the face of the world, your dealing with a crappy "book." It's really competitive environment, the team work is limited.
