In hindsight after retiring

Pros

Excellent security because of their no layoff policy. Gave me the opportunity to have a job that would give me a pension in my retirement when I had no significant skills or education in a particular field. Great job if you like working unsupervised every minute and like being outdoors in all kinds of weather. The days go by very quickly. They never drag. Most coworkers are great people to work with.

Cons

Unreasonable productivity expectations based on mathematical formulations rather than real life variables. Punitive consequences for injuries. Employees are required to report even the slightest injury, which results in a lower score on your review and a lower raise for that review period. This results in some employees not reporting injuries to protect their raise. Veiled attempts by management to force senior couriers to resign and/or retire so their positions can be filled by lower paid couriers. Too much micromanagement.

Pros

Good pay even if inexperienced. Steady work. I get 40 hours most weeks even in the winter. Summers offer overtime opportunities and road pay opportunities. Weekend work is optional. The company promoted me from the dock to a driver position and the training they provided was reasonably good.

Cons

Management cares more about speed and their numbers than whether things are done right. You need to make sure you are working safely even if you may catch flak for going slowly. The incompetence of supervisors can make your job very stressful, but as long as you insist on doing things safely and have no accidents the stress leaves the moment you're out the door. You will start as a driver on call. You have weekends off, but the on call schedule means having a social life during the week is out of the question.

Pros

The pay is good because it does not require a degree

Cons

the work is repetitive, there is no down time and if they don't need you they send you home even if you only worked 3 hours.
