Pros

Name recognition. The company is the largest of its kind, but mainly now through acquisition of smaller competitors. Competition is there but very few can match the resources of FEI.

Cons

Leadership is very distrusting of employees. It is difficult if not impossible to get accolades for going beyond job description. The communication between management and emploees is mostly limited to criticism and demand for compliance.

Pros

If the construction industry is doing well, and you are willing to work long hours, and have an outgoing, sales oriented personality, you can do very well at Ferguson. The top 10 people in a branch make half the money. You could end up making way more money than people in many other industries who have much more responsibility than you. You must be ready to do whatever they ask of you. Many sales people must also work in the warehouse because Ferguson thinks it saves them money, since you will be on commission.

Cons

The construction industry is an old, unsophisticated industry. So many colleagues, vendors and customers are 20 years behind the times. The work rules, vacation, benefits, and management style reflect that. Their computer system is terrible, and they are putting a new one in that they helped to write, so it will be crap as well. When construction slows, and it always does, Ferguson will lay you off at the drop of a hat. Over a third of all recruits quit in the first year.
