Pros

Generally competitive salaries and good benefits. If you are very good with Technology no one is likely to ask questions as they wouldn't want to reveal how little they know themselves.

Cons

Fidelity is very political and top heavy. Over 25% of IT people have titles of Director or above, however this is not because of ability, it is because it is the only way Fidelity can retain staff. These people would not cut it at technology companies where engineering and merit are central. In order to accomplish anything at Fidelity, you must have countless meeting with many groups of people, most of whom will not understand any technical aspects of the discussion. Instead decision makers will rely on people with inflated titles whom they believe to be technical gurus, but who are simply the best at appearances and politics. Fidelity is extremely title, appearance, and politics conscious. Your actual ability to innovate, be creative, or lead is secondary to these factors. If you are a true lover of technology who wants to learn and grow, then you should make every effort to join a proper technology company. Avoid Fidelity at all costs. It

Pros

Pays is fair and when bonus and profit sharing is funded - compensation is fair.

Cons

This company is horribly inefficient. Senior management changes frequently and with those changes is always a reorganization and change of strategy. Fidelity chose RTP in NC as the home for their $100 million dollar new facility and planned to add 2000 + jobs. They started off strong - bought the land, moved hundreds of folks down from Boston and then pulled the plug and decided they would rather operate in TX and other parts of MA. With hundreds of families making a committment to relocate for the company, leaving family, selling their homes in a bad housing market and taking losses on the moves and home sales - most that relocated were laid off before their 1st year finished in the 'new' location. Folks that relocated without a relocation package paid thousands of dollars to get to NC for the company - and the company decided to change strategy and then laid these same 'committed' employees off. Many folks made personal sacrafices for Fidelity - and the company just hung their employees out to dry. Very deceitful company - provides little information to the employees - and what is communicated is mostly not accurate/honest. The culture is highly politicized and very back-stabbing as the company has so many layoffs everyone is always trying to make the other guy look bad in hopes of saving their own position.

Pros

Private company alleviates any issues with potentially conflicting best interests of shareholders vs clients.

Cons

Company offered a voluntary buyout a few years ago and thousands of managers retired because of it. This created a power vacuum that was filled by some of the worst business people known to mankind. In fact, the person they hired to run personal investing left with her hair on fire less than two years in (she’s at vanguard now). The folks inherited as executive leaders are amateur, and it’s obvious. Legions of leaders who lack leadership and managerial skills. You’ll find some Cracker Jack MBAs who did a corp sponsored exec mba via UMASS or similar - you won’t find talented and experienced/accomplished executives. Just decades-old folks who move from division to division every so often. Salt Lake City site’s ubiquity of Mormons makes for a bizarre, cliquey, and toxic atmosphere. Words can’t describe the oddness with this regional site.
