Great place to work if you're motivated and a self-starter

Pros

From top to bottom, Fire Engine RED is a company that knows itself and is committed to serving institutions of Higher Education through a variety of services. The CEO and Owner works hard to promote a culture of transparency not only internally, but also with it's clients as well. This is something I very much value as an employee. Work-life balance is also a big piece of the company culture. Having worked at an institution that was always willing to take more of my time, it's a huge difference being at Fire Engine RED. Yes, there are demands at different times like any other job, but leadership is incredibly supportive and wants you to take time off when needed. Compensation is incredibly fair and unlike a public company, the CEO works hard to make sure that your efforts are recognized. I've received two generous pay raises since starting at the company and know the opportunity for more exists. In regards to advancement and mobility opportunities, I would say that there are lots of opportunities depending on your skill set. If you make the professional and personal investment in Fire Engine RED, you will see opportunities. Several of my colleagues have been promoted, able to work across divisions and build on their own success.

Cons

Given that we're a virtual company, I'd love more opportunities to connect with others in person and meet people face to face. I've met several already, but would love the opportunity to meet more and make more connections.

Pros

With great QA and leadership, I'm able to keep raising the bar with my work and watch my abilities grow. I feel like I'm finally working with people that want to get the best product out the door without settling with "good enough." We are also constantly evolving our communication methods to reduce email clutter. I love not getting emails with vague or empty subject lines and getting a quick Slack message instead. It also eliminates the endless game of email tag. The CEO also uses our benefits package in a way that makes sense. Instead of just handing out bonuses, she works with HR to create tax-free contributions to help get us more money in the long run. The company also put a finance consultant on retainer so we can have any and all of our money questions answered, as a group or in a private chat, and at no cost to us — that's better than any ping pong table in my book!

Cons

As with any remote company, if you're not a self starter, it might be difficult to get into the swing of working remotely and keeping your motivation. If you are, though, you can use the flexibility to your advantage and leverage the great talent you're working with to propel yourself and your work forward.

Pros

6 years under my belt and I couldn't be happier. This isn't just a job. Fire Engine RED is a part of me. I have grown professionally and made some amazing friends along the way. This is a company where you really feel like you make an impact both within the company and the higher education industry.

Cons

Working from home requires a certain amount of discipline that isn't for everyone.
