I was offered a salaried position running the audio/visual department at a new hotel for Five Star. I was the third person in six months and the only local to take this job...a red flag which I unfortunately ignored. The hotel is located in a remote area where finding quality employees is next to impossible. I was the only Five Star employee they were able to hire and thus I was responsible for all aspects of the job from director/management duties down to the day to day a/v tech duties. This frequently meant being on site 12+ hours to cover early morning meetings, daytime coverage/meetings, and evening events/dinners, day after day. Rinse/wash/repeat. No additional training was ever provided by Five Star. Throughout the course of the summer I worked multiple consecutive 55-65+ hour weeks 10-15 days in a row without a day off. Day off opportunities were random, sporadic, and were rarely consecutive. Five Star management was fully aware of how unsustainable this position was. I asked for help on multiple occasions and received none. Being that I was doing two people's jobs for the price of one, I felt justified in asking for an increase in my salary. They denied it. Aside from a few verbal pats on the back, they did nothing to assist me or to help make the position more sustainable. When business levels finally dropped off and the hotel was going into a brief shutdown period, with zero warning Five Star conveniently decided to let me go. No discussion regarding specific improvements that could have been made was ever had. No second chance was given. I wasted hundreds of dollars paying into benefits I never had the time to use. They probably figured my salary wasn't worth paying with a closed hotel. Unless you are willing to put your personal life on hold in favor of living at work, I can't recommend against working for this company enough.
