Disconnect, Turnover and Job Security

Pros

Positive work environment, unlimited PTO, flexible work hours.

Cons

Working at Future means that you will ALWAYS wonder whether or not your job is actually secure. The turnover rate is extremely high. During my three years with the company (one, pre-acquisition), I had roughly 6 different bosses, most of whom were not in the position long enough to make any type of impact. Because the company is based out of the UK, you spend a huge amount of time trying to get a hold of various departments, without success. There is an enormous disconnect between the NY office and the offices and staff in the UK. As Future acquires new businesses (at an extremely fast pace), the disconnect between departments grows. Internal resources are untapped.

If there's one cliche you can just about always apply to Future it's that the only constant is change. Future as an organization has changed so dramatically over the last couple of years, and in many ways it become necessary to build policies to address instability while it was happening. That sort of frenetic pace absent clear structure can absolutely be anxiety inducing, but to say it was never clear whether your job was secure means not enough was done to communicate with you. While it may be a small comfort now, Future has been working at an incredible pace to make sure these experiences are never repeated. Regular check ins from management, a new People & Culture experience so everyone has a better understanding of their roles, and huge steps in training for everyone has made it possible for this company to grow without that uneasy sensation. And many of those policies actually started in the NY office, to help eliminate some of that perceived disconnect with the UK side of the business. I hope you found something that makes you happy when you moved on from us, but also hope you know if you were to ever return you'd find that awkwardness you experienced during that extreme growth period is something everyone here has taken very seriously and addressed.

Pros

Unlimited holiday is a fantastic perk as our the regular social events

Cons

Future constantly keeping buying new companies, so there are few opportunities to progress as any new opening is filled by an incoming manager from a new acquisition making a sideways move rather than being made redundant.

Future has made a lot of acquisitions recently, and that transition is never as smooth as everyone hopes it will be. Risk of redundancy is a source of anxiety for everyone, and new opportunities in that environment can feel challenging. At the same time, Future has been in a constant state of growth outside acquisitions. We've launched several new brands in the last year with plans to add more, and those teams are constantly being filled by people looking to seek a new challenge and reach new goals. I hope you're able to find a place where you're happy, it's unfortunate you didn't feel like that place was here.

It's not always easy to share your story, and before we get into anything else I want to thank you for that. Future is growing at an explosive rate right now, and we're learning very quickly that not all of our internal mechanisms have held up to that growth particularly well. Issues, and sometimes people, fall through the cracks. We know it's a problem, and now we're addressing it. Better policies, more resources, and oversight will help ensure this sort of thing doesn't happen to someone else. And at some point in the not-too-distant future this will become evident with actions over words.
