Pros

GE is a large company run much like a collection of small business. In theory, the diverse spread of GE businesses should make it relatively immune from the ups and downs of any particular market, however since Jack Welsh left, that does not seem to be the case. Aviation is a high tech business and the split between commercial and military programs again should offer protection from short term ups and downs. GE still offers competitive salaries.

Cons

In the past 30+ years, it is my opinion that the company has been going down hill. There is too much emphesis on politics and meeting short term (and short sighted) initiatives and not enough emphesis on long term experience, performace and loyalty. EVERYTHING is measured, primarily through obsolete Six Sigma methodology. (Six Sigma worked fine for ten years, but there is only so much water you can squeeze from a rock.) You can expect a good paying job that will have intense pressure and measurments that you probably can't meet. Loyalty is no longer appreciated. I've been there over 30 years, but if you're just starting out, you won't come anywhere close to that.

Pros

Incredibly competent staff in all disciplines enable you to learn about the total business from true experts in their field. A determination to design, build and support outstanding products matched by the results from the customers' point of view. Typical across all of GE, a place where everyone, no matter where they came from, has a realistic shot to rise to their fullest potential provided they put forth the effort, indeed, an incredible effort, since that's what most seem to be doing [speaking of professional employees, that is].

Cons

You will be called of mediocre performance, so be prepared to produce; of course, so will your peers, so if it happens it's highly likely to be a fair call.

Pros

THeir trainings are considered some of the best in the world. THey are some where on the lower end of good companies. Some people have said that is the best place they have worked.

Cons

Poor leadership - my leaders lead by fear instead of being pleasant. Employees who value their time with their children are looked down upon. Managers are constantly trying to weigh out who they are competing with for the next promotion. Upper management is noticing that many employees are leaving, but they can't figure out why and employees are too scared to let them know. Employees who question management are immediately pegged as "incapable of performing their jobs". I thought that GE would be a good choice, I thought they encouraged a good work/life balance from their marketing - but that was all marketing. I wish I could go back in time and turn down their job offers and take one of my other offers.
