Pros

Highly competitent and talented co-workers. Can do attitude. Exciting technology and business.

Cons

Insane restrictions on travel budgets. Impossible to advance to Executive Band and above without being "annointed" early in your career. H.R. controls who advances - not a "meritocracy." Many aviation job skills don't translate to other GE businesses except for generalist roles: HR, finance & legal. This also limits career advancement opportunities. Salary reviews are decoupled from annual performance reviews - salary increases are on a 14 to 18 month cycle and don't keep up with inflation. The biggest problem is making the quarterly income numbers - budget limitations often stifle business growth.

Pros

The prestige of the company helps, but not too much, the fact that you work for a 300,000 employee conglomerate filled with 50 year olds and some out-dated managers who haven't seen today's youth at work.

Cons

Managers tend not to work with you, as it was for me when I was a component test engineer. Managers run "cells" or areas, where it splits into smaller divisions. In smaller divisions, you work for other more qualified employees who you want to be your manager, since they observe the actual work that you perform. Managers get calls from these employees about your performance, rather than taking a minute to observe the work that you do.

Pros

The industry is dynamic and crucial: it is a net exporter of hardware and an important source of innovation. Sometimes you get exposed to state-of-the-art developments in several disciplines.

Cons

Lack of domain knowledge on part of middle and senior management: too much emphasis on 6-Sigma certification: an emphasis on formalism and disdain for true innovation: a constipated beauracracy interlaced with personal duchies that thrive on a cult of personality. An overwhelming push to outsource and offshore as a first and last resort.
