The Most Incompetent Management in Existence

Pros

Pros depend on what department or division you work in. The pay was very competitive for new hires. The 6% match 100% day 1 vested 401k was also great. Long time employees get upset that there isn't profit sharing, but the guaranteed 6% that ends up being more than what some people got for profit sharing. It's also been rare to be 100% vested on day 1. The time off was also unexpectedly good for certain grade levels. There are a lot of talented and fun people from different backgrounds who work hard. Unfortunately, many are laid off for no good reason. Then you have to pick up their work. You don't get rewarded for picking up this work. It's assume you just feel lucky you get to keep your job.

Cons

Imagine if Michael Scott from "The Office" was a sociopath or psychopath. That's Todd Combs, the GEICO CEO. Imagine Dunder Mifflin is GEICO. The show would be a little less light hearted, but the incompetence will make you laugh when you aren't crying. All of the good things are offset by the decisions that trickle down from above. The company is being run by one of Warren Buffett's hedge fund minions that fancies GEICO as a tech company. While the tech (especially internal systems) is badly outdated and needs a refresh, the hedge fund CEO is not knowledgeable enough to make certain decisions or hire the right people to make decisions. Todd Combs and most people he hires are true examples of failing upwards. He's only been successful at lay offs, creating enemies, and ruining a decent brand. And maybe that's what he was charged with doing. Based on all of the news about Warren Buffett lately, it seems his brain is pudding, and maybe there reflected back to who he keeps close. This isn't a problem unless you're an employee of GEICO who just wants to do an honest job, have relative job security, and take care of your family. The constant threats and back and forth of lay offs and return to office are huge, purposeless distractions. It makes sense when you consider real estate investments and the odds of putting so many GEICO employees back on the road. Additionally, the company is extremely management top heavy with the burden of doing work on the few people they haven't laid off. There are three groups of employees: OG GEICO employees, former Capital One employees, and a assortment of employees not from either of these places. Each group has its own style of working. Many of the managers have come from Capital One over the last year or two. It became expected that, every time there was a new manager announced, they'd be from Capital One. Some of the Capital One people are okay. Mostly, I think many of them make a solid paycheck while moving around clip art on PowerPoint and pretending to know things. At the end of the day, I don't blame these people for getting a paycheck. I would do the same thing. If you are thinking of coming to GEICO and leaving a job that's isn't that bad, wait it out. Especially if you have a family or health care needs. You really cannot trust that you will have a job from week-to-week.
