Pros

For an administrative assistant (i.e., secretary), the compensation package was one of the best available—both in pay and health insurance. I also had the chance to work for some genuinely kind scientists.

Cons

When I became a regular employee after two years as a contractor, the company was great. However, continual outsourcing of key internal functions meant that nobody had a clue about how to get basic things (accounting, personnel, etc.) done.

Good job, bad structure

Pros

The company provides good benefits and a competitive salary. There are significant in-house resources available for personal and technical development.

Cons

Overburdened and top-heavy structure which led to "oversight" that crippled the ability to get anything done. The company promotes those that play politics, even if they are technically inept. The company suffers from cumbersome internal review processes in a market that demands a more agile and adaptable approach. This process results in a significant amount of work that does not help advance programs and projects, further increasing an already heavy workload that makes having a healthy work/life balance impossible.
