Pros

Fun to plan and work at a summer camp

Cons

Read the job description carefully. Add up all the hours you’re committing to and divide into the total compensation. It comes out to minimum wage. For the Camp Director! Shame on Galileo.

Thanks for your review as we value your feedback. We’re glad that you enjoyed the work but are disheartened to hear that you were dissatisfied with the compensation. We communicate the salary and hours for the role before the job begins, and pride ourselves on the additional professional development, training and mentoring that are a part of the role’s benefits as well. Thanks again for your feedback, and if you have any other thoughts, feel free to email us directly at outreach@galileo-learning.com.

Pros

App usually works well for clocking in and out

Cons

*Company uses progressive buzzwords to cover for the fact they severely underpay their camp staff. They will respond that many camps typically pay teachers and interns minimum wage (or close to it). This is a poor excuse. They have no problem talking about how much more inclusive they are than other companies, but that doesn't matter if you do not pay the people you are including a living wage. *In 2019 a child wandered off and it was hours before he was found. The company responded by firing the director and blaming the employees instead of taking any responsibility for the conditions that led to this happening: Underpaid, overworked people with camper groups that are too large. *The company culture could be summed in the phrase "toxic positivity". The environment is loud and overwhelming for a lot of kids. If you suggest any activity that isn't loud songs/skits/games, you are dismissed as not being a team player, even when the kids don't want to do any more loud activities.

We deeply appreciate your perspective on our organization. We’re continuing to explore ways to make our positions and pay as competitive as possible, with current rates competitive to similar summer programs. We also balance that with offering our staff the training, professional development, and hands-on experience that will set them up for success in future endeavors as well. We pride ourselves on creating a culture in which what it means to be Galilean can take many forms, whether it’s through cheers or supportive teaching for a camp project. We encourage our staff to share feedback directly with their managers during the camp season, so we all have an opportunity to work together to find solutions in constructive ways during and after the summer season. Should you have any other thoughts, feel free to email us directly at outreach@galileo-learning.com.
