Pros

Good training/academy to bring you up to speed on the role. Pretty easy job for the most part, as you will rarely need to spend time late at work. Benefits are good in regards to 401k match, health insurance and PTO. Ongoing training in a variety of different areas within IT.

Cons

Far more cons to working at Gartner than Pros. 2.5 years ago, Gartner used to have a great culture (professional) and you could turn to almost anyone for advice. Within the past year or so, there is nothing but frat boys and very young people right out of college. I wouldn't turn to 95% of people here now for advice as they have no clue what they are doing. All territories are looked at as "one in the same", which is the furthest thing from the truth. 90% of your success here is dependent upon your territory. Pay is below average. Making $65K per year for hitting your quote is insane. Account Managers are getting promoted to management roles within a year or less sometimes, some of which are fresh out of college with no sales experience. If you want to go into a field sales role, you better be brown nosing hard and have a good territory. They require (2) years as an account manager and at least (1) Winners Circle. Plenty of people have accomplished this and were kept in the Account Manager role due to upper level management. I personally had a verbal offer for a field position role and upper level management did everything in her power to make sure I couldn't take the opportunity. She found great pride in bashing me to the field managers and VPs when she never even heard me on the phone with a client. Not sure what her incentive was by doing that. SMB is like a prison. They try to keep you here as long as possible, because once they lose you they have to replace you. They cannot keep up with the turnover rate, as it's >50% right now. They want you to be a puppet to put it simply. Do not come to work here for SMB. Do not drink the Gartner Koolaid when they tell you how prestigious it is to work here. If you enjoy being micromanaged, gambling on your territory and who you report to and making very little money then this place is for you.

Pros

Gartner is a great opportunity for recent grads. You will sharpen your business acumen, work with C-level executives, and learn how to transition from your college lifestyle into a semi-professional work environment. Great benefits, onsite gym, nice new building, and plenty of coworkers to befriend. You will need these amenities to maintain your sanity.

Cons

Senior and middle management work hard to keep their direct reports from knowing the truth. Don’t fall for the fun-loving act with the Nerf guns and the beach days...it’s a facade used to cover up all the problems that are stewing beneath the surface. This isn't a happy place to work right now. Gartner is growing its sales force faster than the market demand can support. The SMB sales channel has aggressive hiring goals and with each new hire, the existing sales territories are shrinking. Quotas are not being adjusted to compensate for the lack of opportunity, so unless you’re one of the lucky few with an awesome territory, you are set up to fail. Management isn’t admitting that the bubble has burst and has instead resorted to using fear tactics to motivate its sales force. It’s not working. Employee morale is grim. Gartner loves talking about their “exceptional opportunities” and their fast track to promotion. This is true for *some* people but more often than not, this is simply smoke and mirrors. They sell you on upward mobility, but in reality, it’s only distraction to keep you from exploring bigger and better opportunities outside of Gartner. Don’t fall into that trap. You will find that the vast majority of the AEs promoted to middle management are not ready to manage a team of their peers. They will micromanage (aka “coach”) you and babysit you until you meet every little tedious and time wasting metric they’ve devised. Also, middle management can and will lobby to get you fired if they don’t like you. If you take this role, have an exit strategy. Don’t wait until you’re miserable to start looking for another job. Quit while you’re ahead. Last thing: to demonstrate my point on the culture of deceit, sort all these Glassdoor reviews by date. After each mediocre/poor review, a 4 or 5 star review will magically post a couple days later. Just think about that.

All about the Brand

Pros

Gartner tries to hire only exceptionally talented people, so it was really nice to work with a high caliber of peers and colleagues. It's a reputable brand.

Cons

Gartner pays sales people a pro-rated commission rate until a certain percentage of variable comp is reached. This is always a surprise to every new hire, and depending on when your portfolio's existing business renews, you could have small commissions until Q3/Q4. Leadership is all born from within Gartner, so their vision is very narrowed of how to manage a healthy sales organization. The culture has continued to decline over past year, and the sales management approach is intense micro-management of your every client email and presentations. If you are a sales person early in their career, this type of coaching may benefit you to cut your teeth. It's a great product but their research is only strong in specific areas. The product marketing team has made it very difficult to sell higher-priced products that clients would truly value and be easier to retain business. Their product model is "group membership" removing ability for clients to buy just one research license. Clients have grown frustrated. Gartner leadership is all about their brand, and not their people. People are extremely dispensable, and the churn for sales, delivery teams and HR is very high globally.
