Yes, we are a bit schizophrenic in this way! On one hand, we're grounded in the ethos of "impatient optimism" which compels us to solve big, important problems NOW! On the other, we can't seem to help building skyscrapers when just a 1 bedroom apartment will do. Thanks for the feedback. -chris.ernst@gatesfoundation.org

Pros

Great place to work for it’s name caché. Amazing benefits. You’re surrounded by smart people.

Cons

Bureaucracy at it’s worst. Not a nimble or adaptable organization. The phrase navel gazing comes to mind. Limited upward career mobility.

When the foundation feels bureaucratic, slow, or inward facing, that's on us. Unlike so many players in the sector - governments, multilateral organizations, large nonprofits, even corporations - our operating model comparatively gives us flexibility to adapt, freedom to move fast, and resources to innovate. And right now, some teams are better at harnessing these advantages than others. But make no mistake, operating in these ways is the goal given that's what's required for 21st C success. -chris.ernst@gatesfoundation.org

No doubt about it, we are a fast-paced organization. As I've personally worked in Northern California a number of years, I liken BMGF to the Silicon Valley of philanthropy. If you have any specific ideas about sucky work-life balance, send them my way. -chris.ernst@gatesfoundation.org
