Pros

Incredible talent and low egos at the IC level. These are some of the most thoughtful and bright people I’ve had the opportunity to collaborate with. The open source community around Gatsby as a framework is incredible, engaged, and enthusiastic. The work is legitimately interesting. Decent benefits

Cons

The company had huge turnover in the last year, effectively sliding it into an earlier start-up stage than its notoriety would indicate. They can no longer support senior specialization or junior career growth. Leadership is a combination of bigoted and incompetent; they regularly create and uphold systems that prioritize already overrepresented groups in tech. Regularly gets valuable feedback from employees, commit to make changes, and then either never follows through or changes things only to revert them soon thereafter. Product is built on cowboy coding, repeatedly abandoning things in prototype stage for the next shiny thing and then building on top of and maintaining unfinished and brittle architecture. Touts diversity and remote friendliness but prioritizes PST time zone and consistently underpays outside of America.

Pros

- Remote is ok for most people. I really appreciate being able to work from wherever I choose - There are a lot of fun problems to solve. Open source software is very fun to work on. - Interesting space. It seems like static sites are making a comeback and the technical challenges we face at Gatsby are involved and fun. - Great colleagues, I really enjoy working with most of them. I've made great friends working here.

Cons

- Remote work is not great for everyone. - The founders don't seem to me like they know what they are doing, and it feels to me like it causes a lot of chaos and disorganization. - The founders have made some decisions which felt ethically wrong to me. So I feel uncomfortable bringing my concerns to attention - It feels like the founders sometimes make decisions behind closed doors and push them down without much explanation - The product team could be a lot better

On the right path, but still troubled

Pros

- Gatsby as a product is exceptional and exciting. - Being a fully remote and global team means that you get to work with a culturally diverse cohort. - Generally speaking, the people you work with are genuinely invested in the success of the company and will support your individual growth.

Cons

- Leadership experience is still mixed, with some executive level employees being under-qualified for their roles. At it's best, this is your standard startup/first-time founders issue. At it's worst, this has resulted in insensitive and immature behavior from some of the most senior members of the team. - Gatsby has seen high-turnover in the past couple of years, resulting in the loss of some very talented and influential team members. Those who left were disproportionately from underrepresented groups, including many, many female employees in management positions.
