Pros

The company goals are truly great - doing now what patients need next. That tag line is everywhere. And Genentech is holding on to it's work hard, play hard motto which results in many fun activities. It is a great place for junior employees who want to work a lot of hours and have a good time while being around many smart people. The on site amenities - good cafeterias, career center, healthcare, etc; make it a great place to work.

Cons

It is very difficult to move up especially since the company is being hit very hard financially due to market pressures. Also, new management is being brought in from outside esp in IT that does not really nurture the environment of trust and support of employees that made the company so great to begin with.

Genentech Response

Thank you for sharing your feedback with us. It’s great to hear your appreciation for our company goals and culture. Collective efforts are constantly in motion to help ensure our employees are inspired and engaged to do the important work needed to serve our patients. In addition, our management team does its best to establish clear, unifying goals and fostering collaboration across the organization. That said, we’re working to address the issues with management that you mentioned and to maintain an environment where all of our people can do their best work. Thank you again for leaving us a review!

Fall from 'Best Places to Work'

Pros

+ Fully integrated biotech, meaning that you can move between jobs in sales, research, development, manufacturing and in support functions -- all in the same company + Promising drug pipeline

Cons

Many of the perqs that were omnipresent during the Avastin years are slowly dropping away, as Roche takes a firmer hand managing the compensation of the US (Genentech) staff. This is least apparent in Research; most apparent in the support functions (IT, HR, Legal, etc.). Be very wary of putting too much stock in the 'Best Places to Work' wins in 2008-2011 -- much has changed since then.
