Pros

Nice cafeteria, the people there are friendly

Cons

Working life at Genentech has proved to be one of my worst career disappointments. Upon my entry into the company, I had anticipated an innovative and people-oriented environment with a strong focus on science. However, the truth could not be farther from what I had imagined. Senior leadership in this place is surprisingly out of touch with what's really going on on the ground. There's an ongoing reluctance to listen or even take seriously employees' input, with it being apparent that they really don't care about the issues or welfare of the staff. Regardless of repeated efforts on the part of teams to speak out against problems, management will ignore input to the point of inexorable status quo. Morale has hit an all-time low because it's like screaming into the void. Management decisions are becoming more and more misguided and taking the company down paths that overlook and undermine our key strengths. This failure to lead and to address constructively the criticisms from within is causing damage to our innovation and to retaining employees. It is heartbreaking to see an institution with this much potential and legacy derailed by inefficient, risk-averse leadership. When you want to work in an environment in which your contributions are valued and management does listen, Genentech is no longer such an institution

Burnout culture, high exec turnover

Pros

-Pay is high -Individual contributors tend to be great people -Some groups are better than others…although that divide has closed significantly in the years I worked there. Historically, Product Development and the early R&D groups were better than the Commercial group (scientists vs sales)

Cons

-Leadership takes zero accountability but constantly tells you to take more of it. It’s a manipulation tactic to get people to keep doing more with less. -Burnout culture; they will squeeze you dry and ask for more. Repeatedly. -Obsessed with stacking leadership frameworks on top of each other, leading to a perpetual state of semi confusion and lack of progress. I’ve never seen so many HBR subscriptions put to good use by leadership. -Stopped developing groundbreaking meds a very long time ago, now they just buy late stage molecules. -Not a good place for POCs, especially the Commercial org. They will put you on a glass cliff and watch you fall off. They do not care about veterans or other underrepresented groups either. -Each part of the org is so siloed that you’ll be doing the same thing as numerous other teams, and no one will be aware of the other teams doing the exact same things. Massive misalignment and business inefficiencies usually result. -There are almost no opportunities to move up. -You will likely be RIFd at some point. -Managers are widely acknowledged as being some the worst. This is openly discussed in every part of the org. and has been for at least a decade.
