Pros

Used to be a lot, now not so much - still very good benefits and a six week paid time off sabbatical after working for six years

Cons

1. ROCHE (FHLR) - 100% own Genentech since 2009, at first they left us pretty much alone - NOW - completely have taken over - more and more senior roles moved to the HQ at Basel. 2. ROCHE - it's now all about the bottom line to the accountants in Finance - more and more jobs at lower levels being 'exported' to cheaper locations like Canada (Mississauga), Costa Rica, Hungary (Budapest). It's cheaper to hire people there. ENTIRE functions, like Vendor Finance and Procurement have been or are in the process of being moved away from the Genentech South San Francisco campus 3. Almost impossible to get promoted - unless you know the right contacts - it's not at all about merit and HR don't want to promote anyone as it means paying more salary to that person

Pros

Genentech is an excellent place to work. If you become a full time employee and are promoted to a blue badge the opportunities simply open up. Immediately you have incredible healthcare benefits, development opportunities, bonuses, and other corporate rewards. Even if you are working from home partially or full time you are supplied with great equipment including a sit to stand desk, high end monitor, and chair. Genentech really shows that it cares about its employees and how they are doing. It strives to see its employees prosper, grow, and thrive. It is an excellent place to work and I look forward to serving here for a large portion of my life.

Cons

At first Genentech can be intimidating. Being a green badge (contractor) and attempting to mix with blue badges (FTEs) can be difficult. FTE positions are fairly few and far between. But if one does come up you are encouraged to apply and are always pushed to take chances which is great. The contractor/FTE barrier is really the only tough part, but if you can get past that your potential is almost infinite. Even if you don't get an FTE position and your contract ends, working at Genentech teaches you a lot of valuable skills.
