Pros

- Great science - There are some very hard working people

Cons

- Lots and lots of bull - Favoritism is rampant - Some get promoted for being social butterflies - Someone comes back from Leave and right away promoted. Very unfair to those who worked! - Jobs are posted even though hiring managers already have their pick! Outsiders getting hired at higher positions even though they are not qualified. - Extremely unfair promotions. No wonder people are starting to leave on their own.

Pros

Easy Job: there's hardly any accountability so not much is required on the delivery end; most weeks can usually get by with working 30 hours or less Great Benefits & Salary As many business class flights to HQ in Europe as you want

Cons

No hope for promotion or advancement either above or below--senior management is dead set in its ways and will not change; the best you can do as a manager is watch out for yourself and do what's acceptible. If you are a true people manager and identify/relate to your reports this may not be the best place for you to work.

Pros

Not very demanding. There is hardly any accountability so it's easy to cruise along without working very hard (even after the recent reductions).

Cons

The department leadership in IT is the worst I have ever experienced by a country mile. CIO prides himself on identifying junior leaders with "potential", but has such a poor track record for the much easier task of hiring/aggressively promoting proven talent for senior management positions (many of which are total failures and he ultimately has to lay off just in order to save his own neck). Quite a few significant contributors have been overlooked for leadership opportunities (even a number of people that Genentech has paid to put through MBA programs), while others with no track record or demonstrated ability get fast tracked (and ultimately fail due to their lack of experience).
