Pros

The products our company makes are top notch and they do help a lot of people

Cons

Genentech is terrible at execution, at least in Production Operations. We are great at developing amazing drugs but processes are nearly non-existent. The processes that do exist are not used or not communicated. No one knows who has the rights to make a decision so they ask every single person involved in the issue to help make one, making things horribly inefficient and creating chaos. If anyone is half capable of documenting a process, not even optimizing it, just documenting it, they think you are a genius. Communication at this company is great from the Executives but middle management and cross-functional communication is poor at best. Capable people mangers are also severely lacking.

Pros

The best reasons to work at Genentech are the following: 1) The company has a compelling and fulfilling mission and visions 2) The company lives by its corporate values. It has integrity. 3) People are incredibly smart and incredibly collaborative- everyone is willing to help and works as a team 4) Not a stiff/stuffy place - everyone works hard, but not uptight - "casual intensity" description is really accurate 5) Company benefits and compensation are very competitive/compelling. 6) Strong focus on people development - employees are encouraged to explore new opportunties within the company to get more experience and to grow

Cons

The following are the downsides of working at Genentech: 1) Decisionmaking is slow = decisions often require consensus 2) Given that the company has grown so fast and is realtively young - still not great infrastructure, systems, and process to support the business

Pros

Genentech has been a place where people care about their work, and are focused on getting things done. Management is relatively competent and does not often stand in the way of progress. The culture is fantastic, and the company does a very good job of recognizing and rewarding individual and team success. In a large company it is easy to lose sight of what you do, and how it fits into the big picture. Genentech does a very good job to make sure everyone sees the positive impact its products have on patients. This sort of thing goes beyond money or recognition, and is a tremendous motivating factor for everyone that I work with.

Cons

Genentech was just acquired by Roche, and it is unclear how much of the culture and workforce will change. There are definitely negative feelings here toward Roche. I'm not entirely sure why, but I think people are afraid drastic changes are imminent. These feelings, in addition to the general uncertainty surrounding a merger will be a big obstacles to retaining staff, and retaining focus on goals.
