Pros

The network of talented researchers and scientists willing to share their knowledge is inspiring. It seems that talented employees with great ideas are given the resources and motivation to succeed. The work environment is casually intensive and reminiscent of an academic campus. Managers are generally competent and care about an employee's advancement.

Cons

It definitely seems that the "glory days" of Genentech have passed and a big-company established feel is replacing the start-up mentality. Perks, while nice and generous, are over-hyped. Org structure could be flatter (a lot of middle management). Despite emphasis on professional development, promotions can be difficult to come by.

Pros

The benefits and career growth opportunities are huge at Genentech. Although the base pay may not keep up with the start-up and smaller biotech companies, the stability, wealth of knowledge and benefits/bonus make up for it in spades. Senior management is extremely technically strong and do not make decisions without taking into account the scientific impact of any business decision. The company is making incredibly intelligent decisions regarding growth and is very careful to maintain its culture with every move. It's a place that I truly enjoy working at every day and really feel as though the work I do is meaningful.

Cons

Because the company has grown so much over the last few years it has suffered a few growing pains. Some of the long-time employees came in with very large, complicated systems and the company is having a bit of trouble breaking out of some of these habits. There is a push for simplification and hopefully that will change in the next few years. The only current problem is in some of the loss of culture. Down the line when the company starts producing the blockbuster drugs again it may change, but it is in a serious middle ground for the next few years.

Pros

The company's mission is real and lived every day: Our mission is to be the leading biotechnology company, using human genetic information to discover, develop, manufacture and commercialize biotherapeutics that address significant unmet medical needs. We commit ourselves to high standards of integrity in contributing to the best interests of patients, the medical profession, our employees and our communities, and to seeking significant returns to our stockholders, based on the continual pursuit of scientific and operational excellence.

Cons

This is a huge company and it is easy to get lost in the crowd. For most people that is probably fine but if you are seeking advancement and recognition, it can be difficult. It is sometimes hard to understand why the people that seem to be rising stars are doing so well as often there is nothing special about them. The environment can at times seem VERY political.
