A walk in the park compared to academia

I moved to Genentech from academia: what a breeze of fresh air! I found devoted colleagues, inspired people, a phenomenal work-life balance. Academia was really getting detrimental and here I found a fresh start. I always dared pharmaceutical companies for no good reason. I guess it is part of the academic pyramid scheme to have you believe they are the only good guys and all other places are "dirty". My spouse says I'm back the happy chap I was 20 years ago. Indeed I could be happier.

Cons

Huge company. So many divisions and so many groups. I'm still learning after months here.

Pros

Compared to other pharma companies, Genentech offers wide employee access to professional development classes and programs for both the individual contributor and management tracks. Much better than most other pharma/biotech companies. It has widely used, specialized programs for high potential individuals in the management track.

Cons

Although there are many great managers at Genentech, there are many managers who don't attend this program or attend too late.
