Pros

Beautiful Campus, generous 401k, nice co-workers

Cons

Nepotism - When a job is opened, it is clear who will get it before the process even starts - the hiring manager's favorite. Interviewing for positions is basically a waste of time unless you've been "tapped" and only serves to tick HR boxes. The same goes for promotions - the most deserving rarely get them... Insecurity - constant re-orgs by the parent company leave you feeling one re-org away from being out of job. Good people are jumping ship for a little security as it appears most headcount is now heading overseas..at least in IT Salaries: not keeping up with Bay Area reality. Management keep saying they are addressing it..but they are not. It's almost as if they don't want to attract the top talent anymore. People jump to other companies to get their fair market value - particularly in the Bay Area.

Thank you for taking the time to send us your feedback. We greatly appreciate hearing our employees' input on how we might continue to evolve and improve our processes. Regarding internal candidacy, providing a fair and transparent selection process is a priority and it's unfortunate you feel you've not experienced this. We encourage you to reach out to your HR Business Partner to dive into a deeper conversation if you feel that would be helpful. As far as the cost of living in the SF Bay Area, it's actually true that this topic is being discussed at the highest levels of leadership. As with any complex situation, we may not see changes immediately but it is a topic being taken very seriously. Again, thank you for taking the time to share your feedback.

Pros

Wonderful people Interesting projects Close to San Francisco Airport Casual work environment Lots of Training Opportunities iPhone Shuttle to drive you around campus Cafeteria

Cons

Unfair promotion policies Because of cliques, you can feel left out / undervaled They delivered the big OE announcement but there were so many unknowns. I feel like they know exactly WHO is going to get laid off and they aren't telling. It is like they want to use people up and then dump them. It is hard to "drink" the kool-aid when you know the big wigs are just blowing a lot of hot air. Mixing the Roche and Genentech culture is as sucsessful as mixing oil and water. I would know Art if I saw him walking down the street. Art was more involved and in touch. Who is Ian?

Pros

Purpose-driven business. Strong feeling of employees that they are doing something meaningful - developing and selling drugs that cure cancer. People can be nice, depending on the group. Some areas are very haughty and superior.

Cons

Contract employees are treated, for the most part, as second class citizens. The company expects them to behave like employees - e.g., be on site 40+ hours per week, and be a W-2 workers - but the treatment of them is inconsistent with permanent employees. Contractors are frequently referred to simply as "red badges" (employees have blue badges.) "Red Badge" is a term referring to their non-employee status within the organization as contingent workers. When hired, contract employees are often told that they can be converted to permanent employee status after 6 months, but it rarely happens. It does only if you can find an open position - people don't get "converted." Beware of the agencies, too. Some are very good, but many effectively drop you as soon as you are onboarded, and simply collect a check for their percentage of your earnings.
