Pros

Great benefits, very smart people, great company culture. There is very good investment in research and development and scarcity of resources is never a limiting factor for innovation.

Cons

Research is very hierarchical and there is no career development track for non-PhDs or people who are in the research associate job function. Long-timers are more concerned with getting publications and their own career development rather than how their research aligns with the company goals.

Pros

Best in class for biotech research, top-scientist, ample resources available for research and very thorough evaluation of every project. Very data-oriented.

Cons

Career advancement opportunities are extremely limited (almost non-existent) in research at Genentech. A research associate with a master's degree has never made to the "scientist" level. This kind of hierarchical structure and neglect for one's career outside of lab is hindering the talent.
