ROUGH ROAD AHEAD

Pros

Steady income. Health benefits. Paid vacations. Retirement plan. Job security. Some truly fun, hardworking and unique co-workers. Potential to learn new skills. Get your foot in the door for some + a union dedicated to protecting employees interests, improving wages, hours and working conditions for all, even if you elect not to join.

Cons

Mandatory 10-12 hour days M-F + Saturday. Say goodbye to family time, college or any other interests. All the typical workplace stress and fatigue of an overwhelmingly heavy workload, the increased safety risks, increased health problems, absenteeism, decreased productivity and a high turnover rate like a revolving door. Verbally abusive supervisor who throws temper tantrums. Outdated equipment. General feeling that your not living up to your potential as most careers in the shop and those up front in the office are dead end jobs. Pay is lousy. Lay-offs, cuts on raises, bonuses, and diminishing benefits. Keep your options open...

Pros

Certainly a lot of good hard working people. Most are friendly and willing to help out to train and assist even outside their functional area. If you want to work long hours each week they will promote you though know with each promotion the responsibility and commitment get worse.

Cons

Work life balance, salaries are lower than market, not clear goals - they pay lip service to goals though it is all about the short term numbers and bottom line at the expense of long term goals that can improve the business in the long run. Prime example is how they handled the implementation of their new computer system.

Pros

Advancement opportunity OK if willing to work lots of hours and management likes you Lots of good people at middle to lower levels

Cons

Too much office politics at senior management level Very little recognition by senior management Inconsistent with treatment of departments and employees Compensation package below average. Promote the bonus which in not consistent and capped Talk about team effort but evaluation is all about individual and department accomplishments. No reward for helping other employees or departments - actually works to disadvantage because it takes time away what you could accomplish for yourself, which is all that is rewarded Imbalance in work/life ratio Too heavy VP to employee ratio Use employees to take everything out of them, and then will figure out a way to let them go when done with them Cannot trust senior management
