Pros

Good experience for resume. Learning how to deal with difficult people. Seeing firsthand many of the cliche business 101 mistakes immature companies must overcome on their way to becoming well run organizations.

Cons

Politics. Subject Matter Experts being ignored by less experienced people who were over-promoted into management. High turn-over of some of the best talents leads to high levels of loss of institutional knowledge. Privately-owned means that much of the oversight recieved by publicly owned companies is not present. Siloed decisions are made based on the limited perspective of of small group of disconnected executives.

Cons

Not a lot of growth. Company would rather hire techs outside of company than promote within.
