Pros

Complex manufacturing environment installing advanced specialized Naval equipment provides opportunities in an extremely wide range of areas for all skills and abilities. Given such a wide range of work within this single company, many folks do find a path to work that they find enjoyable and rewarding.

Cons

Current CEO is horrible, petty, and incompetent. He has made bad decision after bad decision in his decade of senior leadership at BIW. He has significantly degraded the workforce and capabilities of the company and it shows in the current poor performance (see 2020 LS6 strike for just one obvious example of his poor decision making, but there are lots more). The three star rating is probably generous but this place needs all the help it can get.

Salary and benefits are good. Company promotes from within.

Cons

Company micro-manages employees, doesn’t allow flex time except in special circumstances and makes employees use their own vacation time to cover a mandatory plant shutdown and then wonders why turnover is going up.
