      Real Engineering, look elsewhere

      Pros

      One of the few jobs which give salaried employees overtime. Sometimes flex time is also given. Ability to work 4 10 hour days for a work week.

      Cons

      No real engineering takes place; only what someone else has written in a manual. Everything is outdated and pay is not great.

      Pros

      EB is an intellectually stimulating place to work. As an engineer in a rather vast technical area, I get to see all aspects of submarine construction. Every day brings a new challenge and problem to be solved, so the job is never boring. But it's not overly stressful either. There's a great balance of desk, R&D, and shipyard work. Another bonus, we're one of the only businesses that's hiring in this economy! EB is a really great place to work.

      Cons

      Some processes are very slow and it seems like it takes a while for things to get accompished because many people have to do reviews and sign offs. The amount of vacation time we get also needs to be addressed! For your first 10 years, you get 2 weeks of vacation. From your tenth to twentieth year, you get three weeks. After twenty years, you get four weeks until you retire. Ten years in the company to get an extra week of vacation? How about five years.

      Pros

      The salary compensation is good, not great but good enough plus they are good about giving regular evaluation raises . EB has some of the best benefits of any company that i have ever worked for so far. Management is very flexible when it come to taking personal time off and "flexing" your week to get your 40 hours in. I lot of the software and technology is made custom right here EB so you get to work with some very advanced tools to do your job. As i write this review there have been reports of huge layoffs at other companies, Electric Boat is currently still hiring in most positions.

      Cons

      Parking here is a pain, the parking lots are a long walk from the main building and fill up fast in the morning. There is a shuttle that makes a loop and picks people up and drops them off in front of the building, however you will need to get to work that much earlier to stand and wait for the shuttle to pick you up. This place is HUGE expect to get lost a few times working here.
