Pros

Low stress, easy to maintain a good life-work balance. GDLS is a placed you go to collect a good paycheck and raise a family.

Cons

I worked there for 10+ years and left to acquire new skills and continue my professional growth. The company culture is improving but still pretty down. Department heads focus on empire building and push bloat into contract bids to maintain them. Nepotism is rampant, they only hire management from within and all managers are afraid to shake the boat. Their engineering design practices and processes, especially for Abrams is really behind. At the time I left 40% of their manhours were funded by Abrams Sustainment and they've been handed this chunk of money for 25+ years; it is a fine example of corporate welfare in the defense industry. At this point they are probably too large to fail, but I really hope other competitors (Oshkosh, Rheinmetall, etc) contain to take business away.

Pros

9/80 schedule Good vacation Great health insurance Very stress free Wonderful people and co workers Great holidays- get week of Christmas and New Years off Yearly raises of 2-4% Company 401k match 6% to 8% from you - best I've ever seen.

Cons

They do not pay near market value. They will not consider automotive as part of the industry. When you are based in Michigan and are a manufacturing company, they should be considered. Many younger people are leaving for 20%+ pay increases. The 9/80 schedule can only go so far. No room for promotion until the older generation starts retiring Very political Old systems, old computers, old cubicles, no wifi - get into the 21st century. No real flexible schedule to work from home if needed. If you have a doc appt, they are not very flexible with personal time, you better plan on making that time up somewhere else in the work week.

Pros

9/80, benefits (for the most part).

Cons

Management unqualified & many micro manage. No opportunities for advancement. Managers show favoritism constantly. No money for training .. Do on your own time. Penny wise/pound foolish. Even though tuition reimbursement is a benefit, if vp engrg doesn't approve you don't get despite your manager approval. Company is behind in technology. No new contracts. Constant threat of layoffs. NO communication!
