      Company trying hard to get it right

      Pros

      Very well respected company - legacy Motorola and GTE - that has tremendous technical capability in advanced communications. Incredibly talented enigneering organization. Solid core of programs for DoD, homeland security and civilian agencies.

      Cons

      Really large and spread out due to many acquisitions, and so difficult to rally around a single objective or to create a unified culture and attachment to the core business, although a recent reorganization is trying to change this. Continuous layoffs defeat the attempts to spread good news and create a sense of optimism. The company grew fast during the upcycle and is likely to be letting go until the markets reverse.

      Pros

      The people-- The opportunities-- you can work on many different projects utilizing many different technologies. The location-- Scottsdale, AZ is a beautiful place to live and work

      Cons

      Large corporation with large-corporation politics Lots of 60 hour weeks Defense Industry, so there's always a threat of layoffs. Unless you align yourself with the right people, it's easy to get "lost".

      Pros

      The folks here are friendly, helpful, and enjoyable to work with. There's a great culture, even without a deep immersion. If you're stuck or need to reach out for help outside of your project scope, I've learned that people are invariably willing to assist.

      Cons

      The current economic crises have taken a toll on compensation and morale. In early 2013 Senior Management nixed merit-based pay increases for at least this year, and in 2012 they reduced PTO earnings. The rate of employment attrition is staggeringly high, but fresh college graduates are being hired semi-annually. I don't have the impression that there is any hope for real career progression.
